Missoula Gay Men’s Chorus The Missoula Gay Men’s Chorus annual Christmas Cabaret provided its audiences with delightfully-crafted holiday entertainment Dec. 9 and 10 in a catered dinner and concert held below the Wilma building. The relatively small chorus nevertheless entertained with the energy and wit one finds only with more metropolitan gay choruses. The Cabaret is the annual fund raiser for the chorus and the causes they support. This was the second performance this year and sold-out both nights. The chorus sang modern hymns such as “Peace, Peace, Peace” and “Let There be Peace” while offering the comfort of winters past through the carols of our childhoods: “Deck The Halls,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Rise Up Shepherds.” The chorus provided frivolous fun and gayety that bridged generations, played with gender and dress codes that furthered their theme of peace on earth, goodwill to all. In addition to choral numbers, solo and duet performances were interwoven along with sing-alongs for the children in the audience-real children and nostalgic grown-ups. The chorus honored a supporter and friend turning 95 by singing “Happy Birthday.” The humorous solos by Glenn Wilkins as a grumpy “Mr. Grinch” and Gary Bowman dressed in drag for “Pretty Little Dolly,” juxtaposed nicely with the gentle poignancy of Tyler White’s hymn solo. Though the food could be better, the desserts sweeter, and the voices more refined, entertainment doesn’t get any better than this in Missoula. |
